Diabetic Supplies

Diabetes is a defect in the body’s ability to convert glucose to energy. It is caused due to insufficient production of glucose by the pancreas. In diabetes patients, the production of glucose is impaired. This disease interferes with the sugar levels in the body thus either making them rise or drop beyond the levels required by the body. Once diagnosed with diabetes, crucial changes in your lifestyle have to occur.

Diabetes drugs are among the diabetic supplies that patients can either get from pharmacies or by ordering them through the Internet. Most of these drugs are however tablets that need to be orally ingested.

Diabetes supplies include a testing meter, lancets, syringes, alcohol swabs and sugar tablets.Other diabetic supplies include Glucose Test Strips. These are instruments used to monitor the level of glucose in the patient’s blood. A significant sample of blood is usually taken from the patient’s fingertip and is placed on to these chemically prepared strips.

Blood glucose meters are other diabetic supplies that can be availed to diabetic patients. These meters are electronic devices also used to measure the amount of glucose in the blood.

To add on to the list of diabetic supply are injections. These devises are often used to inject the various medicines used to treat diabetes to the patient. Manufacture of diabetic supplies has become very common due to the increasing ratio and awareness about this disease among general public.

A diabetic can easily find these supplies in different drug stores all over the world. These supplies are necessary to maintain the patient’s blood sugar level and also to facilitate effective treatment of this fatal disease.

These supplies are not very expensive when you see the purpose they solve. You can purchase these supplies via paying anything between $65 and $75 per unit. Of course, the price also depends on the brand you are interested to purchase.

You can also purchase some of the diabetic supplies that contain voice systems to provide you step by step instructions for proper blood glucose level monitoring.

Blood glucose meters can be bought at just about any pharmacy but a better way to get one is through an online diabetic medical supply company. Most of these companies will give you one for free when you sign up to use them as your testing supply provider. Because these meters cost between $60 to $90 this can be a significant savings to you. But without a consistent supply of test strips, lancets, and alcohol wipes a blood glucose monitor is of little use.

A good diabetic supply company will also work as the intermediary between you, the customer, and the insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid. This means they will fill out and submit the required paper and work with the insurance providers to resolve any problems that may appear.

The monetary cost for diabetic supplies can also be tremendous. Testing for blood sugar levels can cost up to $0.81 per test, and for those who have to test their sugar levels up to 6 times a day, this can add up very quickly.

For everyone who is diabetic it is very important to be aware of his or her blood glucose readings and never fail to keep up with them. It is very important to test your blood glucose levels often enough. You have to be always sure that your blood glucose is not too high or too low. If the blood glucose levels are either too high or too low, something must be done.

Diabetic testing supplies is best way to cope with the diabetic disease and that is why having on hand enough diabetic supplies is so important.

Diabetes Insipidus

Diabetes Insipidus is a disease that is linked to the pituitary gland in the brain. When the word diabetes is mentioned most people will assume that we are speaking of Diabetes Mellitus (Sugar Diabetes). Diabetes Insipidus though is not caused by a lack of insulin or the lack of insulin regulation. Diabetes Insipidus happens when the pituitary gland does not make enough of the hormone ADH.

It is often confused with diabetes mellitus because a symptom that both diseases have in common is frequent and excessive urination.

Diabetes insipidus is sometimes called water diabetes and is completely different to diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes) which has just been discussed. Diabetes insipidus occurs when the pineal gland in the brain is not producing enough of the chemical ADH (anti-diuretic hormone). This chemical is produced by the pineal gland in the brain and is carried by the blood stream to the kidneys where it stimulates the kidneys to reabsorb water in the process of producing urine. Water is a precious commodity for the body and thus the water in the body is constantly being purified and recycled by the kidneys.

The ADH is produced by the pineal gland in the brain which acts like a control centre for regulating the amount of water in the body. The ADH is simply a messenger chemical which is produced by this control centre (the pineal gland) to tell the water-recycling factory (the kidneys) how much water should be recycled and reabsorbed. If the body has too much water (over hydrated) less ADH is sent to the kidneys which then produce more urine and thus the excess water is expelled. If the body needs to conserve water or is starting to dehydrate then more ADH is sent to the kidneys which then produce less urine and water is conserved.

The symptoms of diabetes insipidus are simply drinking more and peeing more. The affected dog will feel fine and act normally. The primary problem is that the kidneys are producing too much urine because the body wants to avoid becoming dehydrated and thus needs to replace the lost water, this will increase the patient’s thirst levels. Some dogs may even seem to become incontinent and start wetting indoors and even start wetting their beds.

There are many medicines available today which function to decrease the quantity of urine produced in the body. They include injections, inhalations, antidiuretic drugs and so on. Some patients will also need to stick to a certain diet, as advised by the physician.

Taking in enough water and fluids can easily control the simplest, most uncomplicated form of diabetes insipidus. But if this particular diabetes symptom is neglected, it can lead to several serious complications at a later time and may even turn fatal if left unattended to.

There are four types of DI. These are :

Neurogenic diabetes insipidus – also called central diabetes insipidus. This is caused when the anti-diuretic hormone or vasopressin produced by the hypothalamus and stored in the pituitary gland is not produced in sufficient quantity. Vasopressin causes the kidneys to preserve water but excrete the same amount of waste products.

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) also known as vasopressin resistance because the kidneys are unaffected by the secretion of vasopressin. NDI is believed to by genetically passed on or caused by kidney diseases or as a side-effect of using drugs like lithium for other illnesses.

Gestagenic and occurs during pregnancy.

Dipsogenic DI and is characterized by excessive fluid consumption. The excess fluids cause vasopressin to be supressed.

Diabetes insipidus testing involves a fluid deprivation test. As the name suggests the patient avoids drinking any fluids for a prescribed time period. The urine is then analyzed to determine it’s concentration and composition. Diabetes insipidus treatment involves having a good and plentiful source of fluid. In the case of neurogenic DI the drug desmopressin is taken to control the frequent thirst and urination.

Insulin Diabetes

Insuline is a naturally produced hormone that converts sugar and starch into energy. As a hormone insulin presence in the body is a proof that the cells are well fed and it helps the liver and muscles to store already processed glucose in the form of glycogen.

Insulin is the hormone (or chemical) in your body responsible for the break down of blood glucose (sugar) into energy. It is produced in a cell called beta cells which resides in the tissue called the islet of langerhans, found in the pancreas organ.

In addition to its role in metabolism, insulin controls the storage and release of fat, the cellular uptake of amino acids and electrolytes, and affects small vessel muscle tone. In fact, the concentration of insulin can affect the entire body. This is why diabetics can suffer a variety of side-effects, including blindness and slow healing of wounds.

Insulin plays a very important and active role and is highly required for both human and animal life. Its disturbance or deficiency is pathological while its deprivation due to removal could lead to death .

Type 1 diabetes require insulin injections in order to survive, while type 2 diabetes patients may need insulin if other medication and dietary changes are ineffective in controlling blood glucose levels.

Insulin as a hormone could be put to several use in the humans body. In the human cell insulin increases potassium uptake glucose and fatty acid sythesis. it decrases the degradation of protein (proteinolysis) and lipolysis ( conversion of fat cell lipids into blood fatty acid) It also decreases the production of glucose from non-sugar substrate (gluconeogenesis) and increases the ability of the adipose tissue to make fat (esterification).

Insulin modifies the activities of enzymes and controls the cellular intake of glucose and other minerals into the muscle and adipose tissues. Insulin also controls glycogen synthesis by influencing the storage of glucose in the liver and muscle cells in the form of glycogen. A fall in the level of insulin causes the liver cells to convert glycogen to glucose and passes it into the blood as an excreted material. This single action accounts for insulin been used medically to treat some forms of diabetes mellitus.

Insulin hormone cannot be taken orally as a pill because it is a protein that can easily be broken down. Once it is rapidly digested, it is no longer effective. Hence, insulin has to be injected into the fat beneath your skin so that it enters your blood slowly and remains there for a longer period of time.

Insulin can be easily destroyed by extremes of temperature so do not place the insulin bottle in the freezer or in sunlight. When more than one bottle of insulin is bought, it is advisable to store them in the refrigerator.

Your blood sugar levels will be affected by the area where you inject insulin. The best location to inject insulin is abdomen as insulin absorption is more rapidly from abdomen as compared to arms or thighs. However, do not inject in the same place each time. Instead, you should move around the same area.

Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not manufacture sufficient amounts of insulin or does not properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that is necessary for the transport of sugar from the blood stream into the cells for use as energy.

Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas – an organ which apart from producing juices that help in digestion of food , also produces certain hormones which have wide ranging effects on body metabolism.

Insulin is used as a treatment for people who have Type I diabetes, otherwise also known as Juvenile Diabetes. it is also used for those people who have Type II diabetes, but have not been able to control it by use of other drugs, or due to other factors.

In conditions like Diabetes Mellitus (DM) there is decreased/absent insulin production ( type 1 ) or decreased sensitivity of cells to glucose (type 2 ) , resulting in elevated blood glucose levels that have deleterious effects on the body.

Various herbs, foods, vitamins, and minerals have been shown to promote insulin sensitivity and help maintain proper blood sugar levels.

Exercise also increases insulin sensitivity. People involved in athletics are known to require less insulin. Besides improving insulin sensitivity, exercise helps us to control our weight and reduce body fat. Weight control is a very important aspect in maintaining insulin sensitivity.

There are three methods of using insulin, and each of it has its own characteristic; This is based on the onset, peak time, and the duration of the action of the insulin. Onset is the period taken by the insulin to reach the bloodstream, when not injected, and begins its activity. Peak time is period when the insulin is at maximum strength in the bloodstream, and duration is how long the insulin continues its work in reducing blood glucose level. It is particularly important to understand this process as it would be used differently for different patients.

Insulin is injected into the subcutaneous layer of the skin. There are various sites on the body where it can be administered this way. These will be described subsequently. Methods include using syringes for each dose or an insulin pump which administers doses throughout the day.

Insulin syringes and needles come in different sizes. The amount of your insulin dose determines the size of the syringe that you will need to use. If you are taking 30 units or less, a 3/10 cc (30 unit) syringe will work. If you are taking 31 to 50 units, 1/2 cc syringe (50 unit) will be needed. If your dose is 51 units or more, a 1 cc (100 unit) syringe will be necessary. The needle sizes vary for each syringe size. Syringes may be purchased from a pharmacy.

The scientific community came up with an insulin pump. A catheter is inserted into the patient’s body at a convenient place, and insulin is pumped into the blood stream or the body through a pump. It is more convenient and also more effective. Using the pump, insulin can be given in three different ways. The Basal form of insulin is infused into the blood continuously. This is much more effective than injections as it is a catheter that remains under the skin and separates the insulin into three different types of insulin. Basal insulin is injected continuously. Bolus doses are administered to act on the carbohydrates consumed in food.

Everyday more and more people in the United States are being diagnosed with Diabetis because of numerous reasons affecting their health. Learning about the early symptoms of diabetes can help one fight the long term effects of this disease. But first, what exactly is diabetes? Diabetes, in blatent terms, is a disease in which the body does by malfunction, does not produce or use insulin. For those who do not already know, insulin is a hormone within the body that helps the body convert sugars and other substances in to energy. It helps break down such nutrients to balance the bodies energy consumption and distribution.

There are basically three different types of diabetes, type 1, type 2 and gestational diabeties in which only effects pregnant women.

Type 1:

Insulin, which our body requires to control the levels of sugar in our blood, is created by the beta cells in the pancreas, or, more specifically, in the Islets of Langerhans, which is a part of the pancreas. In Type 1 diabetes, you will see it in children a lot more than adults.

Type 2:

Type 2 diabetes is much worse than type 1. This combines resistance to insulin to lack of secretion of insulin. Proper diet and exercise is the best way to treat this disease.

Gestational diabetes :

This disease is fairly common and is the sort of diabetes that affects women during pregnancy. This may go away when the baby is born. There are plenty of treatments for this type of diabetes. Finding the right treatment is easy if you spend a few minutes researching.

To help understand the diabeties symptoms better we have listed some general early signs of diabetes which may indicate a need for a doctor visit to get tested.

1. Irritability – Now, we are all a little irritable at times, but constant irritability may be an early sign of problems to come.

2. Frequent Urination – Commonly, frequent urination can be a cause for concern and is a very visable sign of early diabetes.

3. Fatigue – Simply put, diabetes affects the individuals ability to process energy, hence fatigue is an early symptom.

4. Excessive thirst – constant dry mouth and being overly thirsty in accordance with the other symptoms above may indicate a need to get checked out by a doctor.

There are plenty more diabeties symptoms however these are some of the most common. Having one of these symptoms does not mean you have diabetes, they are just some common indicators that everyone at some time in their life will have.

The importance of a good diabeties diet is second to none. Ask a physician whether they can refer a book to you that properly explains a healthy diabetic diet. Early detection and properly being diagnosed can make your situation much easier and as technology progresses one can have confidence in providing better treatments of such a disease.
