Type Diabetes

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism—the digestion system of our body for growth and energy. Almost every food we eat broken down to glucose, the form or sugar which is the fuel for our body.

Glucose passes into the bloodstream, after digestion, where it is used by cells for growth and energy. For glucose to get into cells, insulin must be present. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach.

Types of diabetes: The three main types of diabetes are :

Type 1 Diabetes ( insulin-dependent diabetes)

Type 1 diabetes, sometimes referred to as insulin dependent or juvenile on-set diabetes. As the name implies, the sufferer will need to take insulin once or several times a day to survive. Is is an autoimmune disease that actually turns against the body and instead of attacking cells that cause infection, it actually attacks the cells in the pancreas that are responsible for producing insulin, namely, the beta cells. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease results when the body’s system for fighting infection stops in a part of body.

The cause of type I diabetes is caused by pancreatic inability to produce insulin. It is responsible for 5-10% of cases of diabetes. The pancreatic Islet of Langerhans cells, which secrete the hormone, are destroyed by the body’s own immune system, probably because it mistakes them for a virus.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed in children and adolescents. However, type 2 diabetes in youth are not in common. When type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, the pancreas is usually producing enough insulin, but for unknown reasons, the body cannot use the insulin effectively, a condition called insulin resistance. After several years, insulin production decreases.

Type 2 diabetes, often known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or adult-onset diabetes. This is the most common form of diabetes, and is diagnosed in 90 to 95 percent of all diabetes sufferers, and mainly those in older age.

This diabetes is a result of body tissues becoming resistant to insulin. It accounts for 90-95% of cases. Often the pancreas is producing more than average amounts of insulin, but the cells of the body have become unresponsive to its effect due to the chronically high level of the hormone. Eventually the pancreas may exhaust its over-active secretion of the hormone, and insulin levels fall to below normal.

Type II diabetes should be preventable and manageable by dietary changes alone, but in practice many diabetics (and many obese people without diabetes) find it personally impossible to lose weight or adhere to a healthy diet. Therefore they are frequently treated with drugs which restore the body’s response to insulin, and in some cases injections of insulin.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes develops only during pregnancy. Like type 2 diabetes, it occurs more often in African Americans, American Indians, Hispanic Americans, and among women with a family history of diabetes. Women who have had gestational diabetes have a 20 to 50 percent chance of developing type 2 diabetes within 5 to 10 years.

Gestational diabetes is caused by pregnancy-related hormones or low levels of insulin production. It is not uncommon for women to not present with any symptoms. Often women who are overweight and have a history of diabetes in their family. It also more frequently occurs in African, Hispanic, Latino and Native Americans. There is a close link between symptoms of gestational diabetes and those with type 2 diabetes.

Their blood sugar level will go back to normal after the baby was delivered. Women who acquired Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy should be monitored because it can sometimes lead to the development of Type 2 Diabetes with in a span of 5 to 10 years. Although this seems to be the lightest among the diabetes types, it should not be taken for granted.

Diabetes can be prevented or, in some cases, delay the start of diabetes by taking charge before it advances from what is known as the pre-diabetic stage to being a full-blown illness. Diabetes is a chronic disease affecting as many as 16 million Americans, half of whom do not know they have it. It is the 5th leading cause of death in the United States. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, renal failure, and amputation in the U. S., and is associated with a range of complications, including heart attacks, strokes, amputations and loss of vision.

Controlling your health is dependent on the changes you make in your daily way of life. While avoiding serious illness is one motivation to having a physical lifestyle, in general good health and long-lasting mobility are two other good incentives.

It is also the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults 20-74 years old. Diabetics have up to a 400% greater chance of heart attack or stroke.

Exercise can return blood sugar levels to normal ranges. Preventing or delaying the onset of diabetes is your responsibility; make the lifestyle changes needed to improve your health today.

Diabetes mellitus is a nutritional disorder, and is characterized by an abnormally high level of blood glucose and the excretion of the excess glucose into the urine. Diabetes is known to cause swelling of the ankles and feet by damaging small blood vessels (microangiopathy). Any one of these could be the next natural health remedy for diabetes.

Millions have discovered the healing power of natural remedies and supplements and are turning to vitamins, minerals and herbs as a natural health remedy for diabetes. When considering using any of these natural diabetes remedies, it would be wise for you to consult with your primary care provider.

It is very important to create a more health conscious individuals in the populace. A people who practically believe that it is better and cheaper to prevent an illness than to treat it, when it has become stronger. Moreover, preventive health cannot be divorced from regular medical checks, as this two go hand in hand.

There is no way to detect several non-communicable diseases without undergoing regular medical checks. The importance of these checks cannot be over emphasized. It is required by the body to convert sugar, starches and other foods into energy.

Insulin resistance is understood to be a major contributor to the onset of diabetes. Resistance to insulin appears to have a major effect on heart disease. To be a natural health remedy for diabetes, a supplement must be shown to reduce blood sugar levels.

Blood Sugar Level

Monitoring the blood sugar level is important for diabetics; this must be done on regular basis. The best way to check blood sugar levels is with the help of chart.

The blood sugar level is measured to know and check the amount of sugar, or glucose, in
the blood. The reason why the blood sugar levels must be maintained within the normal
range is because somehow an imbalance of the blood sugar levels would lead to damage in
the small blood vessels. This in turn would result to other health related problems,
which would attack the cardiovascular organs like the heart and arteries.

This is why it is one’s responsibility to look out for his own blood sugar levels by having regular check-ups and consultation with a physician, so as to monitor the blood sugar levels. It’s better
if one doesn’t take any risk when dealing with blood sugar issues.

If one is too busy and cannot spare a day with the doctor, then he can avail of the home
testing kits to measure his blood sugar levels regularly. If you’re using a home testing kit, you also have to know the normal blood sugar levels and ranges, so that when you check your results later, you would know if you’re doing fine or if you need to be more careful with your sugar intake.

Check your blood sugar level frequently. This will let you know how much insulin you will need in order to keep your blood sugar level as close to normal as possible.
But How frequently should we test ? If your blood sugar levels are within a target range, you just need to test once before breakfast each day and occasionally at other times of the day. However for those who take insulin, you may need to check your blood sugar levels several times a day.

The usual time to test your blood sugar level are : before bedtime, one to two hours after meals or a big snack, before you go through any Strenuous physical activity or exercise because this will lower your blood sugar and you may want to make sure that your blood sugar do not drop too low either.

For the diabetic maintaining their blood sugar level in the normal range is key to successfully managing their disease. Without proper blood glucose control the diabetic risks a variety of disorders and complications that are caused by high blood sugar levels. Left untreated for a long period of time diabetes can become a life threatening illness.

The diabetic blood sugar level that those with diabetes should try and maintain is between 70 to 120 mg/dL either before a meal, like breakfast, or four to five hours after their last meal or snack. Blood sugar will go up after any meal or snack and ideally it should drop to under 200 mg/dL about two hours after that meal.

By keeping tight blood sugar control the diabetic can live a long and healthy life and lower their risk for the many complications that include vision degradation, kidney disease, nerve damage and heart disease.

How to Lower Blood Sugar Level :

1) The number one way you can lower your blood sugar is by eating the right foods.

2) Exercise is another way you can control blood sugar levels. If you exercise in the morning before eating this can lower your glucose just about as well as medication.

3) Eating four to five small meals a day rather than three large meals will also help to lower your blood sugar.

4) Avoid drinking a lot of soft drinks because they are high in sugar and carbohydrates.

5) Before taking over the counter drugs always read the ingredients and what effects they may have on you.

6) Find out why your blood sugar levels are high. This can differ from individual to individual and you need to know the specific reasons for your high levels.

By simply following the 5 tips one can easily lower down the sugar levels without any diabetic medications. Doing so will not only keep the diabetics away from the diabetic complications, but also save them from the side effects of diabetic drugs as well.

Insulin Pump

Diabetes management and glucose control can be a tough, challenging and painful ordeal. If you are a diabetic that must take several insulin shots on a daily basis, you probably know how unpleasant and inconvenient this task can become. Over the past few years, a high tech device called an insulin pump has revolutionized the way diabetics get their insulin. Easier to use, convenient and more effective, many are now using insulin pumps and are keeping their blood glucose levels under control.

One of the key improvements on this is the insulin pump, which allows a diabetic to put a pre-measured dose of insulin in their system without messing around with syringes.

Insulin Pumps take away the hassles and pain of having to inject insulin several times a day. They are also much more accurate and effective in the delivery of insulin than regular shots. If you are having trouble controlling your blood glucose levels with shots, you should consider using a pump. Consult with your healthcare professional and find out if a pump is right for you.

A pump usually has a 2-3 day supply of rapid acting insulin in its reservoir; the reservoir connects to the body through a thin tube, which plugs into a cannula in your body, which acts like a lodged input port. Like the reservoir, the cannula has to be changed every two to three days to maintain sterility and avoid infections.

The insulin pump facilitates continuous insulin infusion by injecting a continuous (basal) dose of insulin round the clock and supplemental (bolus) doses just before meal time. The insulin pump comprises of a pump and an infusion set (a syringe, equipped with a microprocessor and a catheter placed subcutaneously in the layer of fat just under the skin in the abdominal area).

However, the insulin pump involves a lot of maintenance issues such as change of batteries, infusion sets, insulin vials, etc to prevent the onset of infection at the site of insertion. Daily monitoring of blood sugars levels and urine testing is compulsory in order to regulate the insulin dosage according to the reading obtained.

The insulin used in insulin pumps is fast acting insulin so it is believed to be a better alternative to most syringe administered insulin, that is slow acting, and is generally an approximation of the amount of insulin that will be needed by the body.

On the negative side, an insulin pump has to be worn all the time so it might be inconvenient for some people that play sport or swim. Strategies have to be developed as a work around for these situations. Insulin pumps are more expensive than the normal syringe method of insulin therapy. Changing from slow to fast acting insulin may cause diabetic ketoacidosis if the fast acting insulin is stopped for some reason, like the supply runs out for example or the cannula gets detached.

The leading pump manufacturers are Animas, Disetronic, Medtronic Minimed and Cozmo. Every manufacturer offer different features, it is recommended to do a little research before deciding which one to get, and determining which insulin pump offers the features that are right for you. Because insulin pumps are expensive devices, ranging from $4000 to $6000, make sure you find out if your insurance company will cover the costs of the pump and the supplies.

Keeping blood sugar diabetes health levels are critical as is the size of your meals and the amount of carbs you take in. As a diabetic, your diabetes daily care routine is the most important item to you. It is important to plan ahead to insure that you keep your routine on schedule without any interruptions.

Before leaving on your trip, plan a pre-trip checkup with your doctor. If it is pretty close to time to get your A1c, get the test done shortly before you plan to travel. Make sure you wear an id bracelet that identifies you as a diabetic. This is especially important if you are traveling by air to avoid any problems that may happen while you are in the air.

Pack your medication so it goes where you go. Never check medication in baggage; take it with you in a carry on bag or purse. Meals out when you vacation are the most stressful times so don’t be shy when ordering from a menu.

You just might find activities such as walking, sports, swimming, etc. that you can enjoy and that are good for you. You can lower your blood sugar when you eat the right diet and this will help to keep your diabetes in control. One of the things you have to be careful about when you have diabetes controlling your blood sugar levels because it can get too high or too low.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes you need to understand that you have the power to control it and live a long healthy life. Many people go on and eat the same way as they did before and this is when they have trouble with there blood sugar levels.

Remember that controlling your diabetes is not hard to do when you find a diet plan that is low in carbs and high in green vegetables and lean meats.

When it comes to diabetes, I think people are too focused on the short term. If you don’t control it in the short term, you run the risk of getting light headed and fainting. That’s a serious problem. This is why most people have their meters that check their blood sugar to make sure everything is normal. Obviously if you’re sending your children to school, you are putting a lot of responsibility on them to check their blood sugar by themselves.

When it comes to the control of sugar diabetes, I like to think the long term. Fainting and being light headed is one thing, but in the long term you can suffer from much more serious complications. Every close call you have when you’re younger. Every time you’ve fainted or had a light head, will end up taking a tool in the future.

Blood sugar diabetes health can be maintained if you take the precautions to plan. Get a check up before your trip and talk to your doctor. Keep your medicines with you when you travel to avoid them getting lost if something happens to your luggage. Make sure you continue to test your blood sugar and keep up with your levels.
