High blood sugar is called hyperglycemia in medical terms and it’s also called high blood glucose. The only way to know for sure if you have it is through a test. If you do have hyperglycemia, the sooner you find out, the sooner you can treat it because having this condition puts you at a greater risk for diabetes and if you get diabetes, you have to live with it the rest of your life.
High blood sugar levels occur in the human body when excessive amounts of glucose are found in the blood stream. When excessive amounts of glucose are built up in the bloodstream and the body cannot properly convert it to energy.
Normal blood glucose levels are recorded between 70 and 150 mg. These levels are usually lowest in the morning and rise after each meal that you eat.
If your body is having issues converting glucose to energy, then you are at risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Sometimes, all that is needed to reduce high blood sugar levels is to make changes to your diet and increase the amount of physical activity (meaning exercise). These types of changes in your diet and routine could have a positive affect on your blood sugar levels and hopefully reverse the potentially life-threatening illnesses and diseases that can affect your health and quality of life.
It is very important that you know the above signs of high blood sugar, to help yourself get checked early and prevent problems later on.
Too much sugar in your blood causes it to get thicker and your brain tells your body it is thirsty thus causing you to drink more in the hopes of thinning it out. Drinking more liquids unfortunately, will not have the desired effect.
Another common sign is frequent urination. The extra sugar goes through the kidneys and while the kidneys can reabsorb glucose, they can’t reabsorb too much of it and so will cause frequent urination to expel it.
The third top sign is fatigue. People with hyperglycemia will generally feel tired, weak, and not have the amount of energy they want. The sugar floating around in their system is not getting to the cells so that it can be used for energy.
If you do not yet have diabetes, start lowering your high blood sugar now so you will be less likely to get diabetes in the future.
