Diabetes Insulin

Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not manufacture sufficient amounts of insulin or does not properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that is necessary for the transport of sugar from the blood stream into the cells for use as energy.

Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas – an organ which apart from producing juices that help in digestion of food , also produces certain hormones which have wide ranging effects on body metabolism.

Insulin is used as a treatment for people who have Type I diabetes, otherwise also known as Juvenile Diabetes. it is also used for those people who have Type II diabetes, but have not been able to control it by use of other drugs, or due to other factors.

In conditions like Diabetes Mellitus (DM) there is decreased/absent insulin production ( type 1 ) or decreased sensitivity of cells to glucose (type 2 ) , resulting in elevated blood glucose levels that have deleterious effects on the body.

Various herbs, foods, vitamins, and minerals have been shown to promote insulin sensitivity and help maintain proper blood sugar levels.

Exercise also increases insulin sensitivity. People involved in athletics are known to require less insulin. Besides improving insulin sensitivity, exercise helps us to control our weight and reduce body fat. Weight control is a very important aspect in maintaining insulin sensitivity.

There are three methods of using insulin, and each of it has its own characteristic; This is based on the onset, peak time, and the duration of the action of the insulin. Onset is the period taken by the insulin to reach the bloodstream, when not injected, and begins its activity. Peak time is period when the insulin is at maximum strength in the bloodstream, and duration is how long the insulin continues its work in reducing blood glucose level. It is particularly important to understand this process as it would be used differently for different patients.

Insulin is injected into the subcutaneous layer of the skin. There are various sites on the body where it can be administered this way. These will be described subsequently. Methods include using syringes for each dose or an insulin pump which administers doses throughout the day.

Insulin syringes and needles come in different sizes. The amount of your insulin dose determines the size of the syringe that you will need to use. If you are taking 30 units or less, a 3/10 cc (30 unit) syringe will work. If you are taking 31 to 50 units, 1/2 cc syringe (50 unit) will be needed. If your dose is 51 units or more, a 1 cc (100 unit) syringe will be necessary. The needle sizes vary for each syringe size. Syringes may be purchased from a pharmacy.

The scientific community came up with an insulin pump. A catheter is inserted into the patient’s body at a convenient place, and insulin is pumped into the blood stream or the body through a pump. It is more convenient and also more effective. Using the pump, insulin can be given in three different ways. The Basal form of insulin is infused into the blood continuously. This is much more effective than injections as it is a catheter that remains under the skin and separates the insulin into three different types of insulin. Basal insulin is injected continuously. Bolus doses are administered to act on the carbohydrates consumed in food.

Diabetis

Everyday more and more people in the United States are being diagnosed with Diabetis because of numerous reasons affecting their health. Learning about the early symptoms of diabetes can help one fight the long term effects of this disease. But first, what exactly is diabetes? Diabetes, in blatent terms, is a disease in which the body does by malfunction, does not produce or use insulin. For those who do not already know, insulin is a hormone within the body that helps the body convert sugars and other substances in to energy. It helps break down such nutrients to balance the bodies energy consumption and distribution.

There are basically three different types of diabetes, type 1, type 2 and gestational diabeties in which only effects pregnant women.

Type 1:

Insulin, which our body requires to control the levels of sugar in our blood, is created by the beta cells in the pancreas, or, more specifically, in the Islets of Langerhans, which is a part of the pancreas. In Type 1 diabetes, you will see it in children a lot more than adults.

Type 2:

Type 2 diabetes is much worse than type 1. This combines resistance to insulin to lack of secretion of insulin. Proper diet and exercise is the best way to treat this disease.

Gestational diabetes :

This disease is fairly common and is the sort of diabetes that affects women during pregnancy. This may go away when the baby is born. There are plenty of treatments for this type of diabetes. Finding the right treatment is easy if you spend a few minutes researching.

To help understand the diabeties symptoms better we have listed some general early signs of diabetes which may indicate a need for a doctor visit to get tested.

1. Irritability – Now, we are all a little irritable at times, but constant irritability may be an early sign of problems to come.

2. Frequent Urination – Commonly, frequent urination can be a cause for concern and is a very visable sign of early diabetes.

3. Fatigue – Simply put, diabetes affects the individuals ability to process energy, hence fatigue is an early symptom.

4. Excessive thirst – constant dry mouth and being overly thirsty in accordance with the other symptoms above may indicate a need to get checked out by a doctor.

There are plenty more diabeties symptoms however these are some of the most common. Having one of these symptoms does not mean you have diabetes, they are just some common indicators that everyone at some time in their life will have.

The importance of a good diabeties diet is second to none. Ask a physician whether they can refer a book to you that properly explains a healthy diabetic diet. Early detection and properly being diagnosed can make your situation much easier and as technology progresses one can have confidence in providing better treatments of such a disease.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a defect in the body’s ability to convert glucose to energy. It is caused due to insufficient production of glucose by the pancreas. In diabetes patients, the production of glucose is impaired.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use Insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed, in the body, to control the rate at which sugar, starch and other food are converted into glucose required as energy for daily life. The hormone is produced and released
into the blood by an organ called ‘Pancreas’. This insulin help to maintain the blood glucose level within a normal range.

Diabetes is a serious disease. But the startling truth is that diabetes is reversible. Diabetes is the number one cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This disease is a condition where the body is unable to automatically regulate blood glucose levels, resulting in too much glucose (a sugar) in the blood.

Approximately 8% of the population in the United States has diabetes. This means that approximately 16 million people have been diagnosed with the disease, based only on national statistics. The American Diabetes Association estimates that diabetes accounts for 178,000 deaths, 54,000 amputees, and 12,000-24,000 cases of blindness annually. Blindness is 25 times more common among diabetic patients compared to nondiabetics. It is proposed that by the year 2010, diabetes will exceed both heart disease and cancer as the leading cause of death through its many complications.

3 type of diabetes, these are:

INSULIN DEPENDENT/TYPE I DIABETES: This type of diabetes was initially called Juvenile onset diabetes because it affects adolescents and young adults. It is caused by a sudden failure of the pancreas to produce Insulin. It is, therefore, an acute disease, presenting with thirst, polyuria (passing large amount of urine), diuresis and weight loss.

NON-INSULIN DEPENDENT/ TYPE II DIABETES: This is the most prevalent type of diabetes, accounting for more than 80% of all diabetic cases. It is found in adults and the elderly. This type of diabetes develops gradually over a long period of time (unnoticed) and is characterized by insufficient insulin, deficient insulin in the blood or the inability of the body to utilize the insulin resent (Insulin resistance).

GESTATIONAL DIABETES: This type of diabetes occurs during pregnancy and disappears after delivery, within 3weeks. An estimated 3% of all pregnancies are accompanied by gestational diabetes and almost half of these patients are prone to developing permanent diabetes later in life.

The symptoms of diabetes include excessive urination, excessive thirst and hunger, sudden weight loss, blurred vision, delay in healing of wounds, dry and itchy skin, repeated infections, fatigue and headache. These symptoms, while suggestive of diabetes, may be due to other reasons also.

The diagnosis of diabetes is made by a simple blood test measuring blood glucose level. Usually blood glucose level tests are repeated on a subsequent day to confirm the diagnosis. Your health care team may also request that you have a glucose tolerance test. If two hours after taking the glucose drink your glucose level is 200 or above, you will be diagnosed as having diabetes.

As yet, there is no treatment for either type of diabetes, although there are many ways of keeping diabetes in control. Studies have shown that good control of blood glucose (blood sugar) is the key to avoid diabetic complications later.

If you have diabetes, you are much more likely to have a risk of stroke, heart disease, or a heart attack. In fact, 2 out of 3 people with diabetes die from stroke or heart disease. There are three conditions that make people with diabetes vulnerable to foot problems. These are vascular disease and foot deformities. About 30 percent of patients with Type 1 diabetes and 10 to 40 percent of those with Type 2 diabetes eventually will suffer from kidney failure. Diabetes also may cause damage to nerves in your body.

Some of the most important things people with diabetes should know is a healthy, nutritional diet and a regular exercise program can help in treating the disease. Speak with your doctor about what kind of diet you should consider following, along with a moderate exercise program.
